Sources of sub - GZK cosmic rays

چکیده

We analyze the existing evidence that BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs) are sources of the highest-energy cosmic rays. We argue that three independent signatures observed in the real data — (1) improvement of correlations with corrections of trajectories for the Galactic magnetic field; (2) connection between γ-ray and UHECR emissions; (3) non-uniform distribution of correlating rays over the sky — are consistent with the hypothesis that a substantial fraction of cosmic rays in the energy range (4 − 6) × 10 19 eV are protons accelerated in BL Lacs.

Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays: Old Physics or New Physics?

We consider the advantages of and the problems associated with hypotheses to explain the origin of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECR: E > 10 EeV) and the “trans-GZK” cosmic rays (TGZK: E > 100 EeV) both through (‘old physics” (acceleration in cosmic sources) and “new physics” (new particles, topological defects, fat neutrino cross sections, Lorentz invariance violation).

Exotic Neutrino Interactions in Cosmic Rays

The spectrum of extra-galactic cosmic rays (CRs) is expected to follow the GreisenZatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) cutoff at about 5× 10 GeV which results from energy losses of charged nuclei in the cosmic microwave background. So far the confrontation of this feature with CR data is inconclusive. In the absence of close-by sources a power-law continuation of the spectrum might signal the contribution of ...

Violation of the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff: a tempest in a (magnetic) Teapot? Why cosmic ray energies above 10(20) eV may not require new physics.

The apparent lack of suitable astrophysical sources for the observed highest energy cosmic rays within approximately 20 Mpc is the "Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) paradox." We constrain representative models of the extragalactic magnetic field structure by Faraday rotation measurements; limits are at the microG level rather than the nG level usually assumed. In such fields, even the highest ener...

On Gamma Ray Burst and Blazar AGN Origins of the Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays in Light of First Results from Auger

The discoveries of the GZK cutoff with the HiRes and Auger Observatories and the discovery by Auger of clustering of > ∼ 60 EeV ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) towards nearby ( < ∼ 75 Mpc) AGNs along the supergalactic plane establishes the astrophysical origin of the UHECRs. The likely sources of the UHECRs are gamma-ray bursts and radio-loud AGNs because: (1) they are extragalactic; (2)...

Magnetic horizons of UHECR sources and the GZK feature

We study the effect of random extra-galactic magnetic fields on the propagation of protons of energy larger than 10 eV. We show that for reasonable field values (in the 100 nG range) the transition between diffusive and ballistic regimes occurs in the same energy range as the GZK cutoff (a few 10 eV). The usual interpretation of the flux reduction above the GZK energy in terms of a sudden reduc...
